How we buy a Rolex in Dorking: walk-in, papers, instant or consignment

Selling a Rolex is simpler than the internet makes it look if you deal with a shop that will actually handle the watch. Alexander Windsor is an independent pre-owned specialist in Dorking. We are not an authorised Rolex retailer. If you can get to South Street, walk in, put the watch on the counter and talk it through.

This guide covers selling a Rolex in Dorking and the rest of Surrey: walk-ins, what to bring, how an offer is built, and consignment versus an instant sale. Start on our sell your watch page, or contact the boutique.

Walk in, or book first

You do not need a long appointment to start. We are open Monday to Friday, 11am to 4pm. Saturday is by appointment only.

If you would rather not wait, call ahead or send photographs through the sell-your-watch form. Pictures of the dial, case back, bracelet, clasp and any paperwork are enough for a first look. A photo is not a valuation. We confirm a figure only when the watch is in front of us.

Clients come from Dorking, Leatherhead, Reigate, Guildford and further across Surrey. If you cannot visit, we will explain how to send the watch fully insured. Do not post a Rolex by ordinary mail.

What to bring

Bring the watch. That is the one thing we must see. The more of the original set you still have, the easier it is to give a complete offer.

  • The watch, on the bracelet or strap it is currently fitted to.
  • The original box, if you have it: inner box, outer sleeve, pouches and hang tags.
  • Papers: the warranty card or certificate, booklets, and any service receipts.
  • Photo ID, such as a passport or driving licence. We record who we are paying.

A complete box and papers set usually supports a stronger figure, because the next owner can see the history. We still buy watches without them. The offer simply reflects what is missing. You do not need a printed valuation from another shop, and you should not polish the watch the night before. Heavy polishing removes metal, and on some Rolex sports models it shows.

If you know the reference number, or you have a recent service invoice, bring that too. If you do not, we will identify the watch in the shop.

How our offers work

An offer is based on the watch in front of us, not on a screenshot of an asking price online. Asking prices are not selling prices, and they are not what a boutique can pay.

We look at the reference and serial, the condition of the case, bezel, crystal, dial and bracelet, whether the movement is running within a sensible range, and whether the box, papers and extras are present. We also look at what similar pieces are actually changing hands for, not at the highest listing on a classified site.

There is no fee for a valuation and no obligation to accept. If the figure is not right, you take the watch home. If you accept an instant purchase, payment is arranged promptly, often the same day once identity checks are complete. We do not ask you to leave the watch “for a few days” unless you have chosen consignment, or you posted it and we need a closer look.

Instant sale or consignment

Instant purchase is the straightforward route. We agree a price, we pay you, the watch is ours. It suits people who want a decision and funds without waiting for a buyer. The figure is what we can pay as a specialist shop that will then authenticate, guarantee and retail the watch, so it sits below a typical retail asking price. That is normal.

Consignment is for clients who want us to sell the watch for them. We photograph it, list it, store it securely and deal with enquiries. You wait until it sells, and our commission is agreed before we take it in. The eventual proceeds can be higher than an instant offer. It can also take longer, and there is no guarantee of a sale on a particular date. Tell us whether speed or the last pound matters more.

If you are moving to another watch rather than cashing out, part exchange may be cleaner than selling first and buying later. You can look at current watches in stock and put the value of yours towards one of them.

On an instant sale we record the watch and your ID, then pay you. On consignment the watch stays here until it sells or you ask for it back, subject to the agreement. If you posted it, we confirm receipt in writing and will not proceed until you have accepted the figure.
