Local watch repair in Dorking: boutique work vs a Rolex service centre

Search for watch repair in Dorking and you will find jewellers, kiosks and the promise of a “Rolex service” that may not mean what you think. Alexander Windsor is a small independent boutique on South Street. We service and repair luxury watches, including Rolex, as part of the same shop that buys and sells pre-owned pieces. We are not a manufacturer service centre.

That distinction matters. This article sets out what we can do locally, and when the honest answer is to send the watch to the brand. For the work we take in, see our repairs page, or contact the boutique and bring the watch in.

What we can do in Dorking

Plenty of jobs are local and worth doing here rather than posting the watch to a factory on spec. Battery replacement on a quartz piece, a scratched or cracked crystal, a polish of case and bracelet, a pressure test after a crystal has been fitted, and an assessment of a mechanical watch that has stopped or is running poorly are the work we see every week.

A full mechanical service is a bigger job: the movement is stripped, cleaned, lubricated, regulated and the case is resealed. We take that work on for Swiss watches, including Rolex, through watchmakers we trust. We quote after looking at the watch, not from a photograph of the dial. Two similar Submariners can hide very different conditions inside.

We also repair jewellery in the same premises: resizing, chains, clasps and setting. If you are already in for a watch, it is often convenient. The jewellery counter is part of the same shop.

A boutique is not a manufacturer service centre

An official Rolex service centre strips a movement to a factory specification, fits genuine Rolex parts and returns the watch with an official service record. That is the right route if you want factory paperwork on a current sports model, or if the watch needs parts that only Rolex will supply. It is usually slower, and the case and bracelet may be refinished to Rolex’s own standard, which is not always what a collector wants on an older watch.

A small independent boutique is a different thing. We can assess the watch in Dorking, deal with batteries, crystals, polishing and pressure testing, and arrange a mechanical service without you travelling into London. We will not pretend that a local service is the same as a Rolex service centre. If this particular watch should go to Rolex, we will say so.

Batteries, crystals and polishing

Quartz watches still need a battery. A cheap swap can cost you the gasket, and then the watch is no longer water resistant even if the case says 100 metres. We replace batteries properly and can pressure-test afterwards.

Crystals chip, haze and scratch. Fitting a new one restores the look of the watch and, on a sports model, the seal. We will tell you whether a genuine or a high-quality replacement crystal is the sensible choice for that reference. Polishing is the job we are most cautious about. Light refinishing can lift fine marks. Aggressive polishing on a Rolex sports case will round the lugs, which can hurt the value later. We would rather leave honest wear than chase a mirror finish.

Rolex and other Swiss watches

Rolex is the brand we are asked about most, because it is what we sell. We also see Omega, Cartier, Breitling, TAG Heuer and other Swiss pieces. The principle is the same: look at the watch, say what is wrong, quote the work, and be clear whether we will do it here, send it to a specialist, or recommend the manufacturer.

If you bought the watch from us, say so when you book. Pre-owned pieces we sell carry a 12-month mechanical warranty covering the movement. Warranty work is handled through us. If you bought elsewhere, we can still look at it as a fresh assessment. We do not keep a spare-parts warehouse for every Rolex calibre. Parts for older movements can be scarce, which is why a proper quote comes after inspection.

How to leave a watch with us

Walk in during opening hours with the watch. We can often give a first opinion while you wait. A battery or crystal may be the whole conversation. A full service is logged, quoted and timed once we have seen inside. Bring the watch, the box if you have it, and any previous service papers. You do not need original Rolex papers for a repair, but they help us identify the reference.

If you would rather not wait, telephone first or use the contact page. Saturday is by appointment. Posting a watch for service is possible with proper insurance. Do not rely on an untracked envelope. If you are unsure, bring it in.
